PARKS & RECREATION COMMITTEE REPORT NO. 105
Councillor Stewart presented a report of the Pahks & Recreation Committee in which
the Committee respectfully submitted the following:
A meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee was held on ~esday, September 14,
1971.
Present were: Councillor N. Stewart, P. Miller, W. Trent, Members L. Keffev,
F. Caruso, M. Dawson, B, Blick, B. Cru~p; also in attendance
were N. Weller, Parks Foreman and B. Young, Recreation Director.
Youth Centre
Mr. B, Young, Recreation Director, gave a resume of the activities of the Youth
Centre during the past summer months. His presentation included pictures (slides)
and a tape describing the programme. Mr. Young asked that the Centre be held
on a continuing basis for at least one night per week during the winter month5.
After discussion it was~lt that most Committee Members were in favour of this,
and that the Chairman, Director and Mr. B. Blick were asked to go over the
budget .end see if money was available, and report back at the next meeting.

Parks and Recreation Committee Report No. 105 cont'd
Art Show
Mrs. M. Dawson gave a.report on the Art Show and stated that there was a loss
of approximately $100~00; this included $87.00 for easels which will be retained
by the Recreation Department and $60.00 expenses for Mrs. Cathan Shoniker, who
came from Peterborough to help us organize the show. Mrs. Dawsmn stated that
there was considerable dissent amongst the participants of the show and suggested
that next year's show should be formulated now. Mr. Greg Paul is being invited
to the next ~eeting of the Committee tomsist in the preparation of the 1972 Show.
Town Bleachers
The Committee approved the Town Bleachers being loaned to the High School for
the Spring and Fall sports activities, and that the Works Department be asked
to provide the shipping of the bleachers to and from the site.
Lions Park
The Committee recommended that a light be installed at the foo~ of Reuben Street
as it is felt that the present lighting is inadequate.
Track ancl, Field
Mr. Norm Weller has been seriously asked to consider reactivating the track and
field programme within the Town. He stated that he felt that he did not have
the time available to set up this programme and the Recreation Director, Barry
Young 1 was asked to contact any people who might be interested in this venture.
Fell, Winter and Spring Recreation Programmes
The Recreation Director presented the programme to cover this period which has
been circulated to Council members. Mr. Young pointed out that this brief was
not complete, as some of the programmes offered had not yet been finalized and
would inform the Council as soon as the complete programme was ready.
Winter Carnival
The Recreation Director was instructed to prepare a programme of the Winter
Carnival for presentation at the next meeting of the Committee for their approval
and Council will be informed of the final retails the first Council Meeting in
November.

Public Works Committee Report No, 106
Councillor Davis presented a report of the Publio Works Committee in which the
Committee respectfully submitted the following:
The Works Committee met July 15th, 1971, with all members in attendance along
with Mr. McGregor,
A number of items were discussed,
1, Item 2 -Letter from J.D. Reid re St, Andrew's College Sanitary Sewer
connectiou.
The Committee recommends this be held until St. Andrews are prepared to enter
the Towns' sewer system.
2. Item 3 -Letter from J. D. Reid re Culvert 17 Irwin.
The Committee recommends thatthis culvert be.installed.
3. The Committee recommends that a storm sewer be installed at the corner of
Edwards and Metcalf Sts.
4 Item 5 -memo from Bill Johnson re water rates.
The Committee recommends that this letter be held for future discussion.
5. Item 6 -letter from J.D. Reid re construction of sidewalks.
Mr. McGregor has been instructed by Council to carry out Mr. Reids recoomendations
in the future.
6. Item 7 -letter from J.D. Reid re water treatment and Sterling Drug.
This date has been extended by Sterling to January, 1972.
7, Item 8 -Letter from E.A. McGregor in regard to work that has been completed
as instructed by Council.

9. Item 10-Letter from Mr. c.c. Johnston re Orsi road damage. The Committee
recommends that ·,.his item be pursued further in regard to payment for road damage
at the Kendall subdivision.
10. Item 16-Letter from Mr. E.A. McGregor re watercourse, corner of Banff and
Kemano. The Committee recommends ~hat this watercou~se be cleared and the people
be advised that a drainage ditch aannot be blocked.
11. Item 31-Letter from Mr. A. Christenson re street culvert.
The Committee does not recommend that this be allowed unless a storm sewer is
installed the length of the street at a proper depth.
12. Item 22-Letter from Mrs. A. Stephens re paving over culvert.
It is the general practice of the Works Department to put stones over culverts
that have been lowered and the Committee feels that it is not the responsibility
of the Town to repave over these culverts and that Mrs. Stephens be so advised.
·13. Item 26-Department of Transport re casings for pipeline.
The Committee recommends a copy of this letter go t~ Mr. McGregor for further
~eference.

Councillors. Henderson and Davis of the Works Committee met with Mr. McGregor
and Mr; J.P. Reid en July 20th in r@gard to reports of Mr. Reids and the

The Committee feels that Mr. Reid has everything well in hand at.this time.
