The judi tiary brought to the Assemblies attent.ion the consequences of Driver involvement in accidents on the Hi~Sh~/·uys. Chief Justice Hayes said in his fifteen years experience on the bench without fail the accused would frmrn or nod_ his head as if he just understood the La« and it's consequences. It boils dmm to one group that are not co-operating as l-lr. Ellis of the Ontario Safety League called them "The Unwashed lVlasses" on Saturday the sub,j ect of the importance of Traffic Safety I:ducation «as discussed by a very 1<ell informed groun of educators. Those Representing the J~le!Tientry and Secondary Schools informed us of the education being given to Students. I couldn't help but be impressed by a statement mac.e that the Secondary Driver Education Courses were not for the sole purpose of producing license holders but to O.evelop "Driver Attitude. 'II Chief James Mackey brought to our attention ho;r those drivers that had prevailed of the Pro-Drivers Club had turned out to be better drivers and enjoved preferred insurance ra.tes for th(~ir A.utomobiles. Connnissioner Eric Silk in this instance agreed that intensifieo education in the importance of Highvray Safety was beneficial to it 1 s recipient. Miss. Mrs. Betty Smith,, a member of the Etobicoke Safety Council and the Metropolitan Citizens 1 Safety Council gave out inforra.ation concerning such a group. 'l 1he Etobicoke Council appointed twenty-five Citbens from the Community to the Safety Council for a period of one year. The Safety Council is under Provincial Charter so that they might receive donations from 'private sources and issue receipts for income tax purposes. They receive a grant from the Etobicoke Council to operate of about $6,000.00 per year. \fuen asked, Mr@ . Smith pointed. out the great 1wrk that the Group does by investigating all aspects of safety in the Community. She also recommends that influential pe01Jle be nameo_ to a Safety Council. Mrs. Smith pointed out that ~<ithout the assistance of the Department of Transport and the assistance of the Safety League it 1<ould be vertualy impossible to exsist.
