I f, I .j J) h !' INAUGURAL MEETING ,..... 2 .. JANUARY 9, 1967 ~myor Davisls Ina~ural Address ContinUed : There are so many events planned for 1967 I am sure one arid all will be pleasan~Iy surprised and proUd to be a part of Centennial Year in AUrora ~-- It is only fitting that I mention heartfelit thanks to all those who have contribUted towards the planning 6f events fo~ 1967 and to the 1967 Centennial of Confederation Conmi.ittee. The one that inaugurated the beginning of a Centennial Year project and the present one that have carried on to see to its successfUl conclUsion. As you will note from your program there are men of great interest to hear from so I shall make my remarks as brief as possible. To represent the Tovm of AUrora as your mayor is certainly one of the most distingUished posts it has been my honour to assume. Moreover, I look forward to the 2 years ahead with great pride and a certainty that all will fare well with our town. It is my opinion that we must now plan ahead to determine our growth capacity and make certain the end resUlts obtained are in the best interest of AUrora. This is no mean task Council faces in these days of ever increasing costs. In our case, we know that the payment of capital costs and sUb- sequent operational expense for the AUrora CommUnity Centre complex, The Extension of sewage treatment facilities and the a.ddi tion to this fine high school will soon be Upon Us. There also exists the possibility of the construction of a new Senior PUblic School. And based on past experience --more monies demanded by the County of York, more monies reqUired for educational pUrposes --not to mention any increase in general town requirements. There does appear bright indications that -- The cost of extending our Sewage Treatment facilities will be far less than originally estimated -- If approved, the annexation of certain lands will allow excellent areas to at~ract and we hope locate new indUstries --· And it is forseeable that the new CommUnity Centre will operate profitably and thUs help defray some of the capital costs thereof. r"·-, INAUGURAL MEETING - 3 - JANUARY 9, 1967 Mayor Davis's InaUgural Address ContinUed : So it is certain that the 1967 -1968 AUrora Council faces an unprecedented challenge in gUiding the fUture of our town. Their task is a most dema~ding one a~d each year the size of mUnicipal problems to be resolved appears to be ever increasing. It may be interesting to mention that each member of council not only assumes Chairmanship of a standing Committee bUt also acts in the capacity of Vice-Chairman and or member of other committees, Each committee regardless of its designated name is an important part of MUnicipal Government. Therefore it may be said that each member of Council acts as a watchdog not only over the actions and expenditUres of his committee alone bUt over every phase of council deliberations. It may be readily seen that theirs is an arduous task and inclUQes many hoUrs of study, work and too often frustration dUe to lack of money available and other causes. One may only do their best and I am sure that each member of the AUrora council will work in the best interest of the Town and ensure an appropriate balance of population with the necessary assessment gains to compensate for increased costs of operations forecasted, May I take this opportUnity to say how honoured we are this evening to have present as our GUest Speaker, who will be fittingly introduced shortly --Dr. Roland Hill --who was my good neighboUr dUring my boyhood days. It is also a·distinct honour for me to have on the platform with us tonight --Dr. Crawford Rose --the first Mayor I had the pleasure of serving Under as a new councillor in 1952. Dr. Rose has devoted mUch of his vast talents to the development of AUrora and the well being of its inhabitants and tonight we have reqUested him to share more of his talents as Master of Ceremonies of our program. --Dr. Rose is what may be called a M,C. t S --M,C. Now Dr. Rose before I ask you to act in that capacity may I present you with this 1967 Centennial of Confederation Emblem and trust you will wear it with pride dUring Centennial Year," o" i. !
