Works Committee report cont. - DJlSCUSSION: Mr. Strauchan w&s very pleased to be informed that the C::mncil for the town of tmrora saw fit to proceed with a Roads ?lan. He was also pler:sed to see in our submission this yeer our intent to improve a street in Aurora. For he pointed out that there has not been any steps taken in this direction for some time. J[ explained that Councillor Murray and myself had visited the site of the street we had planned to do and felt perhaps this street should be left for a latter date. Mr. Strauchan expressed disappoinbwnt, he certainly wants to see a street done. I w2s quite concerned that once mor·e Aurora would put off pavinc a street. I assured him a street would be paved this year. Mr. Strauchcn was critical of jobs such ns the clrc:dnage proble•.J on Kennedy St. West he felt $5000 would be wasted• He pointed out at a latter date when we improve Kennedy from Yonge to it's end that the work we are now doing might not conform with the over all plan, He also pointed out this ite;;, would probably cost half as much under a full program. I asked if he could reco;:;mend another alternative. In discussing a roe:ds program it was pointed out the fallicy of paving over old underground services. It was also pointed out that an engineer could be utilized 365 days a yec,r on a 24 hr. besis. You councillors can no doubt understand the necessity of planning the improvement of underground services. It would be crimin2l to " pave a street at the approxi•~ate cost of $100.000.00 a mile and then have to dig it up to repedr some plugged drain or reulcce some worn out •,crater s:;rvice. V!e dis.cussed the methods "of paying for road improvements. Mr. Strauchan fevoured the local improve,:ient metho.d of financing. We discussed the idea of debenturing for the 81Ii0unt required to do street programing. ?i:r. Strauchan agreed this would be quite acceptable and that we would debenture our half of the cost and the D.H.O, would supply the other half. ;It was pointed out that a 'taxpayer paying approximately $300 taxes was contributing. approxirJately $39.00 of that $300 towards all the streets in A.uror£l. Thi.s in the eyes of the D.H.O, see;Js inadequ8.te particular- ly when we appear to be spending a great deal of money on a new Comr, mnity Centre. ,, L__________ ---·---·--·-~~~~~~~-~· ~· ---~-'!::'' ,.,,-, .• ··~--~ 11th REGUL.A<R -20-June 6th, 1966 Report of Co•1Jmittees cont.
