Three letters from the Aurora Heights Ratepayers Association pertaining to dog control, road conditions and maintenance and the. lack of culverts on Keaa.no Road .in Aurora Heights Subdivision were a read. Council referred the letter re ~ dog control to the Services Committee for· study and recommendation, the letter re road conditions to the Streets Committee and requested that a strong letter be forwar~ed to the subdivider to rectify the situation re culverts. A letter from the St. John Ambulance Association reques~ing a grant from council for the year 1960 was read •. Council referr~d this letter .to the _Finance Committee. , i A letter from P.H. STODDART: Carried.· A letter from Ferguson, Montgomery etc. re; Chimney Industries Limited concerning the use of. Type B vents for venting gas- fired appliances in .Aurora was .re.ad. Co.uncil stated that our :present by-law insisted. that masonry chimneys be. constructed but .that nothing. :prevented the instalation of these vents within a masonry chimney • . A letter from Aurora Heights Limited advising council that all matters pertaining to Aurora Heights Limited shou1d be referred directly to the General Manager, Mr. Sam Sorbara was read. c. •ouncil directed that the letter from Aurora Heights Rate];\ayers Association re cUlverts, a copy be forwarded to Mr. Sorbara for attention and reply. Shoniker· appeared before Council on behalf of Shon Construction CoJntpany Limited re the lot grades in Suneybrook Subdivision and on the strength of his· written agreement to alleviate· this. condition requested permission .to occupy the houses involved when sold. . Meyor Murray stated that only two things might happen .and that is to admit an error has been made and make the best of it or :insist that the houses be torn down.· · Councillor Child stated that Mr. Shoniker now required· this clearance and felt it had been agreed upon by members of council in 1959. · · CHILD: DAVIDSON: • 11 T,llat the release be granted, on the two model houses knowing they are out of grade." · Carried. KAMMOND: CHILD: "That the letter from Shon Construction Company Limited be accepted subject to an agreement being reac.hed between Shon Construction and the Town Engineer covering items not specified in said letter and that the .Mayor be authorized to sign the release when the agreement has been finalized. Carried • Reeve Davis brought to council's attention that a. further Police Committee meeting was required to further study the 1960 requests of .the policemen. · · Councillor Davidson presented a report of the Works . I ' i I Committee re Water Supply in which the committee respectfully , submit the following: '_ ! A meeting of the Works Committee of Aurora Town·Council was, held in t}le Council Chambel;'. at 9.00 P.M., Tues.day_, . January 12, l96Q. The entire committee was present. Also ·present were Mayor D.J. Murr~a.Y, Councillors w. Stoddart, W. C.o.rbett, A •. J. Child, R •. Hammond. and H. Bell. · .. The awarding of the job oUfconstructing the proposed new operating well was discussed. The collllllittee favoured the proposed new operating well of 100ft. of 16" o.D. and 248 ft. of 12" I.D •. ~ell fitted with a,35 ft. screen type of well. · · · · · ' ·. ··· · ·· .. : The t'ender of Bert Huffman &: Sons of Mimico, Ont •. for. the amount of #15,000.00 dated October 17, l959was considered the most favourable. It was decided to' have a bonus:.;:Penalty condition on .the job in the amount of #500.00. The Contractor has set the datellia.rch 30, 1960 as the completion date. Councillor Davidson prueated ·~a. report.of the Works Committee :re removal of Dangerous t:t,'ees damaged by the .recellt storms in which the committee respectfully.submit the following: , . We the committee recommend. that Davey Tree . .TSxperts Co. of Canada Lim:l,ted':S tender ;for the remov;(!.l of various trees on town property, the trimming of others,·recently damaged during the severe winter storms, including the use of a chipper machine with operator, as required, be accepted as outlined in their letter dated J$.11uary 15, 1960. · · · DAVIDSON: PATRICK: ·,' --' ' "That the report of works committee be accepted and the tender of the Davey Tree Expert cost of $1,929.00 be accepted for the removal and trimming of trees, omitting the Elm tre"e on the corner of Larmont and Wellington St. E., and the Seal of the.Corporation be attached hereto •. General discussion followed this motion in which Mayor Murray stated .he was very sincere abo.ut the holding of proper. committee meetings and Councillors Patrick and Davidson re.plied that in this instancei there had not been time · \ since the quotation had only been received and since this was a dangerous situation that called for immediate action. The above motion was re-worded to omit .the Elm tree on the corner of Larmont and Wellington St.E. subsequent to a resolution of Reeve Davis and Councillor Stoddart, which further stated that this tree be removed from the motion until such ·time as we have ascertained that said tree is beyond repair. The motion was then c.arried. Councillor Hammond presented a verbal progress report :re the problem of the boarding ho.use on· Sprl.l.ce . Street and stated that no committee )Ia meeting }).ad been held due to the lack of sufficient facts. Councillor Hammond referred to the letter from residents of Spruc·e Street referred from Correspondence and stated there was no intimation as to who the letter was actually from and further .felt it .intimates that Mr. L. Lee is in co·lusion with client and not in the best interest of the Town. "That the By-law now before the Council be read a second time and that the Council resolve itself into a committee of the whold for that pur:pose~" Carried. The By-law was then read a second time with the following insertion. DAVIS: CORBETT: HAMMOND: CHILD: DAVIS: STODDART: "That the name of E. Eveleigh be inserted in Clause l." Carried. "~hat the By..,law now before the Council be read a third time this day and that Rule 22 of By-law No. 862 be suspended for that purpose." "That the third reading of the By-law be taken as read." Carried. Mayor Murray suggested that next year's Council should have at least two weeks notic.e to consider new appointments to boards and commissions rather than be brought immediately in to a Council Meeting. EAVIS: PATRICK: NEW BUSINESS "That the meeting carry on past the hour of eleven p. m," Carried. Mayor Murray brought to Council's attention the matter of a proposed liqluor vote and stated he had studied the Act that afternoon and had been in touch with the Liquor Control Board since he was aware that a petition as presented might be forthcoming this evening. Mayor Murray outlined that 8 questions were contained in the Act but the Board had recommended that 3 questions only were actually required since Beer Store and Beverage Rooms were included under the vote for Liquor as if the greater is passed then the lesser is accepted. Councillor Child stated that any advertisements had seemed to him that they voted on separate questions and suggested that Council pass a resolution as the petition requested and allow the Liquor Control Board to draw up a proper By-law as they see fit.
