CORBETT: ADAU: "That permission be granted !VIr. Renz to open a coin-operated, unattended, self-service laundry in the Town of Aurora." Carried. A ·letter f!rom ·lV!r. ·A.·J. Cossar advising Council that arrangements have •been made ·under·which Loblaw Groceterias Co. Limited will take over the shopping centre site on the front of his property was read. CORBETT: PATRICK: "That this letter be acknowledged and filed," Carried. A letter from the Secretary of The Aurora Planning Board containing the following resolution was read - "That respecting the request of Council, verbally transmitted by the Mayor, to consider again the re-zoning of ·an unspecified portion of C.B.C. property, the Board would like to have full information con- cerning the applicable amendment voted on in Council, including a • description of. the area affected. · The Board also believes ·that no zoning matters affecting the C.B.C. property should be considered until an agreement is reached on measures to be taken by them for the restoration of the denuded area originally shown and understood by this Board· to remain a wooded area. 11 ' NISBET: CORBETT: DELEGATIONS "That a copy of the by-law passed by Council be forwarded to the Aurora Planning Board." Carried A lVIrs. Anderson and a 1V!rs. Humphries appeared before Council and re- quested permission to commence a Hairdressing Salon over Bea Daileys on Yonge . Street in Aurora. · NISBET: "That permfssidn be granted." CORBETT: Carried. A letter· from the Aurora Memorial Arena Board co'nc'erriing various aspects in connection with tne operation of the arena and the hours of saleable ice time during the season November to April was read. Reeve Davis asked Mr. J. Bolsby who appeared before Council on behalf of the Arena Board that ~f Friday night was relinquished by the Toronto Hockey Leaque would it upset the arena and Mr. Bolsby replied that it was his feeling they would be agreeable if they were given two weeks notice. In connection with the foregoing a brieffrom.the Aurora Minor Hockey Association to Courtcil with various requests "arid including guidence was then read. • ~~I ' j I' I• '230 November 16, 1959 - 7 - 23RD REGULAR Mr. Paul Knowles appeared before Council on behalf of this brief and stated that he felt the letter was self explanatory and could not add anything additional to it. Further to these two letters the foll.owing motion was proposed: DAVIS: CHILD: "That the Town of Aurora back the Arena Board and be responsible for an amount up to $1,200.00 to assist the Arena Board for this season. " Discussion followed this motion in'which the majority of Council stated i -they were 100% behind assisting the Arena Board and the motion was then Carried.· 4t> _,_ . It was decided that a copy of this motion be forwarded to the Aurora Memorial Arena Board and to The Minor Hockey Association. Deputy Reeve Nisbet then introduced to Council l!/Ir, Ken Stiff and explained that l!/Ir, Stiff was a new merchant to Aurora. l!/Ir, Stiff explained to Council that he would not be too specific this evening but desired to show Council the proposed plan for a new building-in Aurora and would like encouragement from Council with regards to this project before the financial structure is commenced, Council viewed the plans of this proposed building with favour. ~ ~ ~ I l!/Ir, Howard Bu:tln appeared before Council with a petition signed by. numerous ratepayers with respect to the proposed extension of St.· Andrews PI'esbyterian Church and the petition was reaq to Council ~tating that the undersigned ta.X payers wish to register their ~bjections to any such permission being granted. Mayor Murray advised l!/Ir, Bunn that .this matter would be delt with during Committee Reports, REPORTS OF COl!lll!IIITTEES Councillor Patrick presented a repor.t of the Works Committee ·in which the. Committee respectfully submit the following: A meeting of the Works Committee was held on Monday, November 1.6ctlt, . 1959_and discussed the letter received from Consolidated Building Corporation regarding manhole steps in Sanitary and Storm Sewers Manholes in :Regency Acres Subdivision. The Committee decided to confirm the Town Engineers decisions .. to condemn all manhole s!eps of European manufacture, PATRICK: ADA::nR: "That the report of the Works Committee be accepted ~a the Seal of the Corporation be attached thereto." Discussion followed this motion .in Vlhich Mayor Murray stated he did not go along with the words 'all European!' The Town Engineer explained that. he me.ant all. European steps because in the shipping and moving f"rom foreign countries allOw for damage to happen to them. Deputy Reeve NiSbet stated that the steel strike had caused thein to purchase foreign steps and apparently a bad lot had been received, Counc·illor Child S\].ggested that it be reworded to read ''that the steps be of Canadian material and made in Canada". It was so decided that the '/, .: r ···n ') -4] .' ' ( ,j ,1, 23RD REGULAR - 8 - November 16, 1959 Committee report be.altered to read, as Councillor Child had sugg~sted. The Motion was then Carried. Reeve Davis stated that Consolidated Building Corporation'woul.d like• a letter that the Engineer's report had eeen accepted by Council. Deputy Reeve Nisbet presented a verbal report in which he stated that following the appointment of a full-time Fire Chief in Aurora the Chief had received requests from. the Townships to carry out fire inspections and the question of charges to be made for.these inspec- tions had arisen. Deputy Reeve Nisbet stated the Committee recommend . a charge of $25.00 plus mileage for these out of town inspections. I· "That the Fire Chief be authorized to charge $25.00 plus mileage for these out of town /niSBET: / -AVIDSON: · inspections. 11 Carried. Councillor Child presented a report of the Town Planning Committee re Presbyterian Church extension in which the Committee respectfully submit the following: . On Tuesday, October 20th, 1959 at 7.00 p.m. this Committee together with all members of Council but one being absent, met to discuss the mat~er of the ·extension of the Presbyterian Church. · Several points were made, o·ne being that we should not change our by-law, it being felt that if we did we would be setting a precedent which would give cause for other people inTown.to request such deviations. Also, that this matter was a matter which should be · turned over to the Committee of Adjustment since they were set up to take care of such matter of contravention of by-laws when they pertain to land use. After considerable discussion it was finally agreed that the Church should be asked to submit a further set of plans for further con- sideration, and the Mayor was requested to pass this information along to Mr. Marshall Rank. CHILD: CORBETT: "That the report of the Planning Committee be approved." Carried. Councillor Patrick advised the Council that the sidewalk on Yonge · Street South had been completed and had proved very satisfactory. UNFINISHED BUSINESS Councillor Child asked if a letter had gone forward to Calwood Ltd. with regards to the conditions of the roads and the Clerk advised Yes. '"'· ' r~­ i 23RD REGULAR - 9 - ''.'""12 November 16, 1959 Reeve Davis stated that it was his understanding that it was necessary for Dr. King and a D.V.A. representative to attend and it was decided that an .effort would be made to arrange a meeting as quickly as possible to finalize this matter. BY-LAWS A by-law to amend the official plan of the Town of Aurora was preaented for a third reading. NISBET: STODDART: "That the by-law now before the Council be read a third time this day." Deputy Reeve Nisbet suggested that the map outlining the amendment be submitted to Council and if each Council member is satisfied with the rezoning then the Deputy Revve moved the third reading be taken as read. NISBET: "That the third reading of the by-law be taken as CORBETT:· read. 11 Carried. NEW BUSINESS Mayor Murray brought to Council's attention that he had received a call from the Department of Highways and that representatives of that Department are visiting Aurora tomorrow with regards to the letting of a contract to lower the grade on Yonge Street South. Mayor Murray further advised that the coming Thursday night was Nomination Night and following the Nomination Meeting Mrs. Murray and himself would be honoured to entertain any who wish to come. Deputy Reeve Nisbet brought to Council's attention the fact that the Policemen and the Police Chief were desirous of organizing teenage dances at the Wells Street Public School. Deputy Reeve Nisbet stated that these dances would be supervised by the Policemen and that he was all in favour of this if other members would endorse it. Members of Council expressed their views and all were in favour and Councillor Stoddart stated that the Police should receive great credit for taking the initiative in this endeavour. NISBET: CHILD; "That Council endorse the principal of the Police handling this teenage dance." Carried. Mayor Murray stated that during the British elections he had noticed that outside the polls there had been placed large signs specifying the poll number and felt this would be an excellant idea to have these signs prepared for Aurora's elections. Deputy Reeve Nisbet stated that sufficient publicity should be given to the Advance Poll to be held on December 5th of this year. CORBETT: "That the meeting adjourn."
