FOURTEENTH MEETING OCT. 4th 1948
The regular monthly meeting of Council was held in the Council Chambers on
Monday Oct. 4th 1948 at 8.00 p.m. with members present; Mayor Rose;Reeve
Cook; Dep.Reeve Corner; Councillors Corbett; Jones; Davlhes; Swindle;
Pringle; Sisman.
The minutes of the last regular meeting were adopted as printed.

Mr. Co; Copland appeared before Council on behalf of the Hydro
Commission.with a view towards the Town consenting to BkK a saving in power
consumption. suggesting street lighting be cut off completly at 1.00 a.m.
W.R.Case asked Council to consider letting him haul some of the.
sand or gravel for Town purposes, in that way splitting the business between
the two truckers.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter of appreciation from the Tennis Club for the Towns
donation of lumber in assisting in the repair of the courts was read, and
afterwards ordered filed~
The Toronto & North York Hunt Club expressed the wish of the
Club that more supervision be carried out at the dump used by the Town in
lessening the danger of fire. An answer to this was instructed to the effect
that the dump does not belong to the Town, but that the matter would receive
the Town 1 s attention·~ as a result the following motion was passed.
SWINDLE, SISMANi That the Clerk write the Hunt Club expressing the Council 1 s
thanks for bring the matter up, but making the fact clear that the dump
was not the Town's responsibility. Carried.
A letter from The Women's Institute reminding Council of the
danger of motor traffic in Town by excessive speed. and the need for the
re-painting of the warning signs at each end of the Town.
A. McLean, Mosley St. asked Council to consider changing the
level of the sidewalk at his residence in order to stop flood water from
remaining o~ the walk. The matter was handed to the Streets Committee to
have the Foreman make the necessary alterations•
Permission was asked that Council would grant the Legion
the right to hold a Poppy tag Day on Sat. Nov. 6th this year.
· SISMAN, SWINDLEl That the Aurora Legion be granted permission
to hold a tag day on Nov. 6th. Carried.
A letter from the Dept. of Municipal Affairs, announcing the
dates for holding a school for assessors, Clerks and Municipal representat-
ives~ was read. the dates for this district, Nov. 3; 4; 5; at Newmarket.
COuncil expressed its wish that the Assessor and Clerk attend these scholls
on the respective days~ ·
Sam Dickey wrote the clerk, asking a hearing with the M.O.H<~;
the Mayor; Clerk and a Council member to discuss sanitary conditions in
. Town. Mr. Dickey appeared in person.
·ie!Councillor Sisman spoke to Council on the plans o:dl the new Legion hall
· . .and. asked for Council consideration of a substantial grant'~
· termission was asked to hold the annual Boy Scout Apple Day
on Sat. Oct. 16th
On motion of PRINGLE, CORBETT this permission was granted•
Dep. Reeve Corner presented plana of two ways that the streets
could be numbered.
REPORTS OF COMMITTEES
Reeve Cook expressed his concern at the delay in being able to
get watermains started' in Town, and feared that due to the lateness of the
season, difficulty may be experienced in laying the pipe.
SWINDLll, DAVIES; That the Water Committeelil be authorized. to
engage Mr. Hawkins to dig the trench for water installation in;the event
of failure to have Mr. Thompson complete the whole cpntract. Carried.
Dep. Reeve Corner presented a report of the Streets Committee
regarding levels of streets & walks as well as stock pi~e of gravel & sandt

be adopted and that the Seal of the Corporation be attached there to. Carried.
COuncillor Jones made a verbal report on the progress at the arena
on the foundation and walls. the job now being completed and the bill for
the work was very near the amount allowed for this work.
Ceuncillor Corbett stated that certain progress was being made
towards getting nets for hockey, that Mr. Offord agreed to construct the ·
frames and nets would have to be procured, at which time prices were not
available~

Councillor Swindle explained to Council the apparent need for better
sanitary conditions at the arena, due to the fact that the arena was being
used for a longer period and would likely be used next summer as well.
The Chairman of the Finance Committee explained that the original idea,
dealt with at the Special meeting of Council with regard to adopting the
1948 assessment would have to be given up, as the Municipal Dept• could
not allow this>~ Permission having been applied for and since received to
extend the time for completing the roll for a period of 60 days'~ tax roll
Due to the urgency of getting certain information compiled for the XXXMitsX
~ the following motionx was passe&.
SISMAN, COOK; That the Clerk be authorized to hire an office assistant to
assist with the completion of the Tax roll. CSJ.rried:~
CORNER, DAVIES; That Mr. Chas. Copland be authorized to proceed with
the survey in respect to Street numbering in co-operation with the Sports
and Publicity Committee. Carried~
DAVIES, CORNER; That the Solicitor be authorized to proceed to obtain a
conveyance of the strip of land for street purposes, extending 9eorge St.
to Kennedy St'~ Carried!.

DAVIES, CORNER; That leave be given to in~roduce a By-law to
Construct sanitary sewers on Yonge St. s. and that the same be now read a
first time. Carried •.
SWINDLE, PRINGLE; That the By-law now before the Council be read
a second time and that the Council dissolve itself into a committee of the
whole for that purpose.· Carried.
SISMAN, COOK; That the By-law now before the Council be read a
third time this day and.that~Rule 22 of By-law# 862 be suspended for that
purpose. Carried.
JONES, SWINDLE; That the third reading be taken as read. Carried;
NEW BUSINESS;
SISMAN, SWINDLE; That all st:eeet lighting be switched off at 1.00
A. M. in order jo conserve power. Carried.
SWINDLE, PRINGLE; That this Council make a grant of $1,000.00 to
the Bu~lding fund of the Aurora Branch of the Canadian Legion and that the
Seal of the Corporation be attached harte. Carried!~
SISMAN, SWINDLE; That the Corporation of the Town of Aurora
purchase the necessary sand from J.E.Bmchanan & necessary gravel from
W .R. Case and that the Seal of the Corporation be attached hereto. Carried.
DAVIES, COOK; That the request of the Recreation Commission for
permission to use the Town Crest on stationery of the Commission be granted,
