A Petition from the retail merchants of town and others asking that the council
endorse a request to the Erovincial ~overnment for protection in the fona of tax-
ation or some other manner by which those concerns with their commercial establish
menta in some other municipality will be made to contribute to local costs qn d be
placed on a more equal footing with the local merchamta,.was presented by Messrs
J!'isher and Jlingillld.
The vommittee ~~po±nted to bring in a report relative to assistance in the
office during the iJ.lness of Mr.Willis reported;"ihat to keep the work of '"reasurer
on town accounts up during the illness of the treasurer and his absence from the o
office on sick leave we believe the duties should be performed by experienced,cap-
able and trustworthy person,and after considering several nemes we recommend the
appointment of Wm.Large,:former accountant of the ]'leury l.Jissell Uo•"
LINTON HENDERSON that Wm Large of the to;vn of Aurora,accountant,be appointed as
acting treasurer !Bllf the town of Aurora during the term that the tre§surer,A.C .A. Will:
is is incapaci ted by illness,such appointment to be for the duration only,of such
illness.That his duties cmmne nee forthwith,and continue at the pleasure of the
council and tjat his remuneration be,duringthis appointment,the sum of twenty dollar!

An amendment was moved by Messrs Malloy and Gunton as follows;tt'.i.hat Assistant
Clerk,M.L.Andreww,be appointed acting Clerk and Treasurer,during the absence of Mr.
A.C.Will.is,Clerk and J:reasurer. The amendment was ruled out of order by the mayor•
The original motion was voted upon and carried•
The E.I...COllll1littee submitted the following report;11 that the sum of $300•00 be
transferred to the E.L.Account as payment for services tp the townpre street light
ing ,waterworks,disposal plant 1:1;nd other power supplied.We suggest that the above 1
aoonue until the month of May,after which the additional amount should be credited
to the E.r...Dept.each month.Hl!rr~ilERSON SPARKS that the report of the E.L.Comnuttee
be adopted as read. Carried.
A letter from the :B'ire Brigade informing council of their selection of a. Chief
to succeed :!!'.Rowe was laid over for a future meeting by unanimous consent.
Dr.Gunton reported upon matters of relief decided during the past month and
upon his conclusions in delving into the matter;.
A letter from the Bell Phone Co regarding permission to ere!lft a pole on Ma.ch-
ell.Ave produced a resolution sponsered by Messrs Stuart and Wilson,that the Bell
Co.be granted the right to erect a pole on Maahell Ave,under the supervision of
the Chairman of the E.L.Dept. Carried.
SPARKS Hl!rrfDERSON that all requests for grants be presented to the Chairmen of
the l!'inance COllll1littee on or before the fifteenth day of .u'ebruary 1940,and that
no request be entertained by thlils council after that date. Carried.
MALLOY STUART that a Willard .wattery of 17 plate be purchased for the town tr1
uck according to price obtained by the chairman of the Streets Committee. Carried!
SPARKS HElif.DERSO--th t the Chairman be authorised to purchase frames for six n ~ r,
diffuser plates for use in the disposal plant at the price of $2.65 each and the
sea~ of the corporation be attached hereto• Carried.
