Aurora Highlands Golf Course
This delegation was withdrawn by the delegate prior to the meeting.
Ms. Christine Mason, Ontario Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals re: Lease of Box Traps for Wildlife
Ms. Mason informed Council that the SPCA had discontinued its practice of
routinely loaning out animal box traps between February 28th and June 31st
of each year. This practice was discontinued because it can spread disease
from one location to another and because a significant number of the animals
trapped in the spring months are mothers, leaving their young unprotected.
Instead, Ms. Mason advocated educating people to live in harmony with
anima 1 s and teaching them to undertake measures to prevent anima 1 s from
nesting in unwelcome areas. Noting other municipalities who agreed with
this policy, Ms. Mason asked the Town of Aurora to discontinue the practice
of its animal control contractors routinely loaning out box traps,
particularly in the spring and summer months.
