Matters for Consideration 6.1 Engaged and Inclusive Project Presentation Kim Clark, Gazelle and Company, presented an overview of the project highlighting the focus on building towards increased inclusion in communities. She further provided details on the objectives to better understand inclusive engagement through an integrated approach across the three municipalities and noted the next steps. There was questions and comments regarding the scope of the project, the census data being used, and other community groups who could provide meaningful contributions to the project. That the memorandum regarding Cultural Diversity in Sport be received; and 2. That the Anti-Black Racism and Anti-Racism Task Force comments regarding Cultural Diversity in Sport be received and referred to staff for consideration and further action as appropriate. Background In late 2015, Council approved the Sport Plan that contains 22 recommendations. A Sport and Community Development Specialist in August 2019 to act on the recommendations outlined in the Sport Plan. One of the recommendations identified the following:  Train staff and volunteers in working with culturally diverse groups to better understand their sport needs  Look to other communities within the region that have responded to changing demographics by providing both culturally appropriate sports and an introduction to traditional Canadian sports The Town engaged in discussions, provided presentations, and set up information tables at the Welcome Centre Immigrant Services prior to the pandemic. Most recently, Town staff presented on the current status of program delivery at a Welcome Centre Immigrant Services staff meeting. As well, staff did a presentation and sought feedback from members of the Alabrar Muslim Association about their experiences and needs in relation to sport and physical activity prior to the pandemic. Page 4 of 14 Cultural Diversity in Sport June 16, 2020 Page 2 of 2 The Sport & Community Development Specialist has outlined project objectives and is identifying next steps to ensure sport is providing a welcoming, safe and inclusive space for culturally diverse community members. Page 7 of 14 Sport Plan Recommendations •Train staff and volunteers in working with culturally diverse groups to better understand their sport needs •Look to other communities within the region that have responded to changing demographics by providing both culturally appropriate sports and an introduction to traditional Canadian Sports Page 8 of 14 Project Objectives Based on Sport Plan recommendations, project objectives include: 1.Sport provides a welcome and safe space for diverse members of the community to participate. 2.Increase participation of culturally diverse groups in sport and physical activity in community sport. 3.Sport leadership roles (coaches, board members, officials) are representative of our community. Page 9 of 14 Achieving the Objectives In order to achieve the project objectives, there is a need to understand the following: 1.Experiences of culturally diverse community members in sport. 2.Are there additional sport offerings of interest that are not currently available. 3.Are there barriers in the current sport structure that is preventing participation / registration. 4.Are the sport offerings available reaching culturally diverse community members through communication efforts? Page 10 of 14 Methods to Collecting Information A critical step in this process is to engage with culturally diverse members of the community. This can be achieved through the following methods: 1.Focus groups 2.Surveys 3.Research of best practices across Canada 4.Review of resources through Sport for Life, Canadian Women & Sport 5.Provide presentations and seek feedback from local social networks, organizations and clubs Page 11 of 14 THANK YOU! QUESTIONS & OPEN DISCUSSION Page 12 of 14 100 John West Way Aurora, Ontario L4G 6J1 (905) 727-3123 aurora.ca Town of Aurora Anti-Black Racism & Anti-Racism Task Force Terms of Reference Purpose The Anti-Black Racism and Anti-Racism Task Force is established to develop strategies to eliminate racism and promote anti-racism in our community and the Municipal Corporation. The task force will identify real and actionable change with the goal of helping to remove systematic racism from the Town of Aurora. Membership The Committee shall be comprised of up to eight (8) members, as follows: • One (1) member of Council; and • Up to seven (7) citizen members selected by Council. Members are encouraged to have relevant lived experience, allies and advocates, and a history of community action. Term The 2018-2022 Term of Council. Remuneration None. Duties and Functions • To work with community groups within Aurora and York Region to identify and develop priorities for the proposed task force • To identify opportunities to increase engagement with people of colour and ensure that diversity not only accepted in the Town, but recognized as crucial to moving forward as a community • To create education and foster an increased public awareness of anti-racism. • To identify real and actionable ways to improve the Town of Aurora through helping to remove systematic racism in the community and the Municipal Corporation. Page 13 of 14 Anti-Black Racism & Anti-Racism Task Force Terms of Reference Page 2 of 2 Reporting The Task Force report to Council at least annually on the progress made on diversity and inclusion in alignment with the Employment Equity Act and Bill C-25. Meeting Time and Location The Task Force will meet monthly as necessary, with the specific dates and times for meetings determined by the Task Force. Additional meetings may be called by the Chair. The Chair may cancel any meeting. Staff Support Staff Liaisons will consist of staff from the Corporate Services department. The Legislative Services division will provide administrative support services to the Committee. Page 14 of 14
