Page 7 of 20 November 7, 2023 Aurora Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic Town of Aurora 100 John West Way, Box 1000 Aurora, ON L4G 6J1 Dear Committee Members, I am writing on behalf of the Canadian Mental Health Association York Region and South Simcoe (CMHA YRSS) to express our sincere interest in being considered as a recipient of the Aurora Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic. With this application we would like to request funding in the amount of $5,000.00 going towards our Mobile Youth Walk-In Clinic (MOBYSS). The impact of mental health struggles, especially among young people, cannot be overstated. Every year, nearly 3,700 individuals in Canada lose their lives to suicide, and it is the leading cause of death for those aged 15-24. This is a critical issue that requires immediate and sustained attention. The pandemic has only exacerbated the mental health challenges faced by young people. Studies indicate that 70% of school aged children have experienced a deterioration of their mental health due to the pandemic’s disruptions. The need for accessible, specialized care has never been greater. One of our most significant initiatives, the Mobile Youth Walk-In Clinic (MOBYSS) was launched in 2015 and has been tackling the loss of young lives to mental illness, addiction and suicide. Operating as Ontario’s first and only mobile and virtual mental and physical health clinic for youth aged 12-25, MOBYSS has provided free, no wait, no judgement care to over 16,000 youth in York Region and South Simcoe since its launch. The MOBYSS schedule can be viewed by clicking here, where you can see we provide services to youth at Aurora High School each Friday from 9am – Noon, as well as all day for virtual appointments. MOBYSS operates five days a week, 52 weeks a year, ensuring that youth can access critical services without barriers. The mobile clinic’s services range from primary care to one-on-one counseling and group discussions. MOBYSS meets young individuals where they are, whether it’s at schools, community centres, or shelters, in both urban and underserved areas. While MOBYSS has made a significant impact, we are faced with the challenge of maintaining its operations. The $350,000 annual operating cost is entirely reliant on philanthropic donations. Your support would directly contribute to sustaining this life- saving initiative. Thank you for your time and consideration in reviewing our application. Should you require any additional information or have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly. Sincerely, Vicky Hatzopoulos Donor Relations Officer CMHA York Region and South Simcoe Page 8 of 20 Keep MOBYSS in Motion Campaign for MOBYSS Youth Mobile Walk-In Clinic in our Community Page 9 of 20 2 Since our founding in 1984, Canadian Mental Health Association of York and South Simcoe (CMHA -YRSS) has become one of the fastest growing chapters of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). Our staff and volunteers support people in their recovery journey towards mental health and wellness, offering over 30 specialized programs and services, serving more than 17,600 individuals each year. Our growth has been a response towards the rising number of individuals suffering from mental health and addiction issues. From 2015 to 2019, emergency department visits for mental health addiction services has grown by 27%, more than double the demand for all other types of services. As COVID-19 has devastated livelihoods, strained relationships, disconnected families and isolated people, this trend will only continue to increase. As a result of the pandemic, 70% of school-aged children, and 66% of preschool aged children have experienced a deterioration in their mental health. The pandemic has and will continue to have significant and lasting negative mental health impacts, particularly on youth. The pandemic, with its uncertainty, social isolation, educational interruptions, has brought intense stress for young people at an incredibly formative time in child development. The impact of the pandemic will not only change the course of individual lives but has the potential to affect an entire generation. We need to protect our greatest asset –the health of the next generation. Now, more than ever, the MOBYSS model, already a ground-breaking mental health initiative for youth in our community, is perfectly positioned to meet the need for both early intervention and crisis support that has emerged within the context of this global pandemic and will continue well beyond. With your investment, we will be able to continue offering mental health and addiction services for youth 12-25. I invite you to familiarize yourself with our vision, and with MOBYSS and urge you to become one of our partners during this critical time. Thank you for learning about this vital initiative, and for all you do for people suffering from mental health and addictions issues. We believe in client, family and caregiver- centred care through partnerships, accountability and action. We embrace innovation to lead and create transformational impact by focusing our resources and implementing strategies that truly save, support and improve lives. “At the end of the day, the services offered on MOBYSS really saved my life. It allowed me to get my health in order, which I would have never done without them. I would not have the resources or funding to reach out for help from a doctor at a typical hospital or health care centre and I would have continued getting sicker, both physically and mentally. Instead, I was able to access all the services I needed all in one place and right at my own school.” -Allison Martin 4 Page 12 of 20 Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest in the industrialized world and First Nations youth die by suicide 5-6X more often than non-Aboriginal youth. 70%of mental health problems have their onset during childhood or adolescence Between 2008– 2009 and 2018– 2019, among youth there was a 61%increase in emergency department visits and a 60% increase in hospitalizations for mental disorders In Canada, only 1 out of 5 children receive appropriate mental health services Young people aged 15-24 are more likely to experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders than any other group 5 Page 13 of 20 6 Since 2015, CMHA YRSS has been tackling the loss of young lives to mental illness, addiction and suicide through MOBYSS (Mobile York South Simcoe), Ontario’s first and only, mobile walk-in health clinic for youth aged 12-25 years. Staffed by Nurse Practitioners, Youth Mental Health Workers and Peer Support Specialists, the 35’ MOBYSS RV, which is wrapped in eye-catching graffiti, has three zones: the medical office that supports comprehensive primary care; a private one-to-one counselling zone to provide individualized clinical support such as de-escalation, crisis intervention, cognitive behaviour therapy etc.; and a lounge area that allows for small group discussion, education, a safe space to rest, or a place to talk. Traditionally, MOBYSS provides immediate access for over 2,000 youth annually to mental and physical health care by travelling directly to schools, community centres and shelters throughout York Region and South Simcoe. With the advent of the pandemic, the MOBYSS team now offers virtual services in addition to in-person care. The team delivered 23 mental health workshops to 3,884 young people. “I visited MOBYSS and shared that I was having suicidal thoughts and didn’t know where to turn. There is actually a youth mental health worker on the bus –someone I could speak to who really listened and understood. Together, we came up with a safety plan for when these thoughts enter my mind. She helped me find hope and motivation to continue on with life. Thank you.” Samira, 16 years old “Nuzhat helped me so much. She taught me useful skills to improve my thinking and mental health.” 8 Page 16 of 20 In many ways the pandemic has increased awareness of mental health and pushed the discussion to the forefront, but the mental health component of COVID-19 is coming on like a tsunami. Nationwide, surveys and studies are finding increasing rates of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. High rates of media consumption, especially prevalent among young people, are resulting in increased levels of stress, contributing to increased physical symptoms for which physicians can’t find a cause. Chronic stress has long term implications for auto-immune disorders, on cognitive function, can cause skin disorders, jaw clenching, stomach pain, and intense headaches, among other physical manifestations. The results are lost productivity in school and the workplace, increased burden and cost to the health care system, and the long term impact resulting from the loss of young lives. Many youth are not doing well. But with your investment, we will ramp up immediate access to care. With timely access to specialized youth mental health services, early intervention and professional support the impact on youth mental health can be mitigated now, and for the future. A generation will not be lost. .
