Aurora Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic
Town of Aurora
100 John West Way
Box 1000
Aurora, ON L4G 6J1
Dear Aurora Mayor’s Charity Golf Classic:
We thank you for your much-needed support last year. Please accept our 2022 request on behalf
of Aurora residents diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses referred to us by healthcare
professionals for urgent help from our Aurora Rainy Day Food & Shelter Program. This
program helps the most vulnerable residents at pending risk of hunger, eviction and disconnected
basic utilities.
Covid-19 continues to create ongoing challenges for our Aurora patient families as they fall
through the cracks and face financial difficulties. As you may recall, hospital social workers,
Child Life Specialists, nurses and physicians refer their low-income, at-risk patients to us for
emergency financial assistance through our Aurora Rainy Day Food & Shelter Program.
The Aurora Rainy Day Food & Shelter Program pays overdue rent and utilities, and provides
grocery gift cards to local grocery stores (maximum of $1,500 per patient per year; may be
higher if extenuating circumstances). Without our support, patients and their families will
imminently face eviction, disconnected basic utilities and food instability due to poverty
resulting from diagnosis of life-threatening illness.
Most people do not realize that income is lost when too sick to work or a parent needs to be
with their ill child; OHIP/OHIP+ does not pay for all medications taken outside of hospital
(i.e., chemo pills taken at home, radiation salve, anti-nausea tablets); not everyone has private
health benefits and those that do, often have co-payments or maximum ceiling limits. Our goal
is to help low-income patient families remain in their own homes, to focus on recovery or
prepare for the end stage of life. The benefit to Town of Aurora residents is avoiding
eviction, disconnected utilities, and hunger – thus reducing strain on families and other social
service providers. Depending on the amount of assistance Aurora families need, with your
support (based on $4,500): 3 (rent assistance) and 45 (grocery cards) patient families can
benefit. For those requiring utility assistance, the number of families helped can range from 3
to 45. Due to the nature of life-threatening illness and variable patient family circumstances, it
is not possible to predict the precise dollar value of overdue rent and utility bills; we do have
history however and in Aurora, overdue rent assistance is what we tend to see.
Unfortunately, we have been forced to decline two (2) requests for overdue rent assistance so far
this year and we fear for our Aurora families. Hence, we respectfully request $4,500 or an
amount you can provide, which should cover 50% of the program for local Aurora patients.
Unfortunately, we continue to have limited means of securing funding for our Aurora
Page 5 of 8

patients. Donors from the Aurora area are still lacking; others prefer to designate their donations
to support patients in their own geographic regions.
To raise additional funds, we are applying for funding from foundations and continuously look
for local support. We also maintain our relationships with previous supporters who no longer are
in a position to financially support us, until they better recover from their own financial
downturns due to Covid-19.
While other social service providers exist including food banks and shelters, for those with
compromised immune systems, the risk of contracting communicable diseases can be higher
with the food bank and sheltered populations. Physicians and registered dieticians prefer their
patients do not consume the typical food bank diet high in processed foods, sodium and sugar.
Hence, receiving grocery gift cards means patients are empowered to select their own food
appropriate to cultural, religious, medical and individual preferences.
While rent and utility relief programs do exist, we continue to hear from referring hospital social
workers and patients that families fall through the cracks because funding is limited and not
everyone meets the criteria for funding.
Hence, we respectfully request funding for our Aurora Rainy Day Food & Shelter Program to
help fill the gaps in the systems. Should we receive funding, this will assist local Aurora patient
families only. Please note that we scale our program up or down based on funds received. Your
support means Aurora residents will remain fed and sheltered in their own homes, while they
recover from their life-threatening illnesses.
Research conducted by the Canadian Cancer Society and the former Canadian Cancer Action
Network reveals ‘91% will suffer loss of income or a rise in expenses…For some, a cancer
diagnosis begins a financial tailspin that pushes ordinary people over the edge resulting in debt,
distress, bankruptcy and even a lifetime on social assistance” (www.cancer.ca). The logical
assumption can be made that this will apply to other life-threatening illnesses.
For youth, “the effects of early childhood poverty are long-lasting and not simply corrected by
better financial security later in life” and “the greater the negative impact on physical and mental
health in adolescent and early adulthood…” (http://chicagopolicyreview.org).
At Shine Through the Rain Foundation (registered charitable #891881005RR0001), we help those
affected by life-threatening illnesses. Whether it’s services or funds, we provide guidance,
support, and financial aid to those in need. We help children, adults and families find the silver
lining. When things seem gloomy and you’re being rained on, we’re here to help you shine
through it.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Laurie Docimo

Who are we?
Shine Through the Rain Foundation supports people through
the intense challenges that they may face as a consequence of
life threatening illness. We provide comfort, guidance and vital
financial assistance to patients and their families during a time
of great need.
The Rainy Day Fund
People often don’t realize the financial devastation caused by
life threatening illness. As well as the emotional and physical
challenges, patients and families can be left overwhelmed as
they try to manage loss of income and additional expenses that
often come hand in hand with a health crisis. The Rainy Day Fund
delivers urgent financial aid, providing emergency payments to
utility companies and landlords to ensure patients avoid eviction
and service disconnections during an already traumatic time. The
Rainy Day Fund also provides financial assistance towards hospital
transportation and parking costs, as well as grocery gift cards to
ensure that patients can access nutritious meals during treatment
and recovery. Special requests for assistance outside the scope
of these services may also be considered in exceptional cases.
Program Guidelines
The Rainy Day Fund is a monthly program that works directly with the
social worker or health care professional that is supporting your care
or treatment plan. They will work with you and your family to complete
the application process, providing all supporting documentation
needed, and will submit the Rainy Day Fund application form on
your behalf.
If you are interested in applying for financial assistance through our
Rainy Day Fund, please ensure you read the application guidelines
that accompany our application form. Our application deadline is
the 15th of each month.

Camp Scholarships
Illness often isolates children from their friends and the activities they
love. We see pediatric patients faced with social isolation as their
deteriorating health and challenging treatment regimes can leave
them restricted. However, when patients feel well enough, perhaps
on their journey to remission or recovery, they should be able to enjoy
camp life, having the same opportunities as other children their age.
We want to help kids be kids, and part of that experience is going
to camp! Our Camp Scholarship program provides funding for a child
to attend a camp of their choice, from dancing and drama, to sports
and circus skills! This program also recognizes the difficulties faced by
children of patients suffering from a life threatening illness, who are
also eligible to apply.

Rainy Day Gifts
A battle with life-threatening illness is a very difficult time for
patients and their families, not only financially, but also physically
and emotionally. The journey for our pediatric patients can be
particularly hard, with upheaval from school life and isolation from
friends. Shine Through The Rain Foundation introduced Rainy Day
Gifts in an effort to recognize this. We carefully hand pack each
gift bundle for a child recipient with toys, games, books, craft kits…
all sorts of surprises to make children laugh and smile. It is our
hope that this gift will offer some small comfort and relief from the
struggles that child is facing, and we distribute our Rainy Day Gifts
to pediatric patients in hospitals across the country.
