MINUTES - Economic Development Advisory Committee - 20140410 TOWN OF AURORA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Date: Thursday, April 10, 2014 Time and Location: 7 p.m., Leksand Room, Aurora Town Hall Committee Members: Councillor Michael Thompson (Chair), Councillor Paul Pirri (Vice Chair), Marilee Harris, and Bruce Walkinshaw Member(s) Absent: Peter Dickens, Kent Dinning, and Lee Helkie Other Attendees: Anthony Ierullo, Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning, Michael Logue, Strategic Programs Coordinator, and Raylene Martell, Council/Committee Secretary Councillor Thompson requested that Councillor Pirri chair the meeting. The Chair called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. DECLARATIONS OF PECUNIARY INTEREST There were no declarations of pecuniary interest under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Moved by Marilee Harris Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the agenda as circulated by Legal and Legislative Services, with the following addition, be approved:  Delegation (a) Mark Kolb, Discover Aurora Re: Discover Aurora Games CARRIED Economic Development Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Thursday, April 10, 2014 Page 2 of 4 ADOPTION OF MINUTES Economic Development Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes of March 20, 2014 Moved by Bruce Walkinshaw Seconded by Marilee Harris THAT the minutes of the Economic Development Advisory Committee meeting of March 20, 2014 be adopted. CARRIED DELEGATIONS (a) Mark Kolb, Discover Aurora Re: Discover Aurora Games Mr. Kolbe presented information on the Discover Aurora website games regarding a “shop local” initiative in the Town of Aurora and requested support from the Town. Moved by Councillor Thompson Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the delegation be received for information. CARRIED MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION 1. Memorandum from the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning Re: Circulation of the Aurora Promenade Streetscape Design & Implementation Plan Moved by Marilee Harris Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the memorandum regarding Circulation of the Aurora Promenade Streetscape Design & Implementation Plan be received for information. Memorandum from the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning Re: Economic Impact of Ice Storm Moved by Marilee Harris Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the memorandum regarding Economic Impact of Ice Storm be received for information. CARRIED 3. Pending List Moved by Councillor Thompson Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the Pending List be received for information. CARRIED NEW BUSINESS Moved by Marilee Harris Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT staff be directed to prepare a single-page flow chart itemizing all of the initiatives that have been brought before the Economic Development Advisory Committee describing their alignment with the Strategic Plan and the Capital Budget process. CARRIED Councillor Thompson inquired whether there was any merit in establishing a committee which promotes “shop local” initiatives within the Town of Aurora. The Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning advised that this was an action item in the Business Retention and Expansion Plan in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, however, no further discussion has occurred. Ms. Harris noted that there are a number of vacant store fronts within Aurora and inquired whether there was any specific reason for the vacancies. The Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning advised that he is unaware of any specific issues and would be interested to see this year’s numbers from the annual Employment Survey.
