MINUTES - Economic Development Advisory Committee - 20140109 TOWN OF AURORA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Date: Thursday, January 9, 2014 Time and Location: 7 p.m., Leksand Room, Aurora Town Hall Committee Members: Councillor Michael Thompson (Chair), Councillor Paul Pirri (Vice Chair), Marilee Harris, Lee Helkie, and Bruce Walkinshaw, Member(s) Absent: Peter Dickens and Kent Dinning Other Attendees: Anthony Ierullo, Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning, Michael Logue, Strategic Program Coordinator, and Raylene Martell, Council/Committee Secretary The Chair called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. DECLARATIONS OF PECUNIARY INTEREST There were no declarations of pecuniary interest under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act. CARRIED DELEGATIONS None MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION INFORMATIONAL ITEMS 1. Memorandum from the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning Re: Final Business Retention & Expansion Action Plan Moved by Bruce Walkinshaw Seconded by Marilee Harris THAT the Economic Development Advisory Committee receive the memorandum regarding Final Business Retention & Expansion Action Plan for information. CARRIED 2. Pending List – Economic Development Advisory Committee Moved by Councillor Paul Pirri Seconded by Marilee Harris THAT the Pending List be received for information. CARRIED 3. Memorandum from the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning Re: Monthly Report (Added Item) Economic Development Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Thursday, January 9, 2014 Page 3 of 4 Moved by Bruce Walkinshaw Seconded by Marilee Harris THAT the memorandum from the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning regarding the Monthly Report be received for information. CARRIED 4. Excerpt from Report No. 5 of Committee of the Whole, Regional Municipality of York Re: Retail Business Holidays Act – The Local Municipality as an Applicant (Added Item) Moved by Councillor Paul Pirri Seconded by Bruce Walkinshaw THAT the Excerpt from Report No. 5 of Committee of the Whole, Regional Municipality of York regarding the Retail Business Holidays Act – The Local Municipality as an Applicant be received for information. CARRIED NEW BUSINESS Chair Thompson advised of ongoing discussions surrounding university locations and would like to bring the item forward to this Committee for comment and guidance. The Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning advised that the CIP would be ready to roll out by the end of February. Marilee Harris inquired who approved the spent money on the consultants for the CIP project. Chair Thompson advised that a placeholder had been set for the project by a promenade study completed in the past. Ms. Harris inquired whether there was anything to be discussed relative to businesses and the impact from the ice storm. Bruce Walkinshaw inquired whether hydro companies were operating on a reduced budget for tree trimming and whether this would have had an impact on the damage caused by the ice storm. Moved by Marilee Harris Seconded by Lee Helkie THAT the Economic Development Advisory Committee recommend to Council: THAT the Manager of Long Range and Strategic Planning report back to the Committee on the impact of the recent ice storm on businesses in Aurora and highlights of how the Town of Aurora assisted businesses in need. CARRIED Economic Development Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Thursday, January 9, 2014 Page 4 of 4 Chair Thompson presented the Aurora Downtown Public Parking plan from 2009 for the Committee members’ information. ADJOURNMENT Moved by Bruce Walkinshaw Seconded by Marilee Harris THAT the meeting be adjourned at 7:59 p.m. CARRIED THE REPORT OF THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING OF JANUARY 9, 2014 RECEIVED APPROVAL BY GENERAL COMMITTEE ON FEBRUARY 4, 2014 AND FINAL COUNCIL ENDORSEMENT OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS ON FEBRUARY 11, 2014.
