feedback on accessibility features.

accessibility standards to be considered as part of the site plan amendment.

(c) Request to install accessible doors at the proposed new entry

7. New Business
Jo-anne Spitzer expressed concern about snow being ploughed into handicapped
spaces in commercial/retail parking lots. The Committee was reminded to contact
the Accessibility Advisor and/or Access Aurora in order to track complaints.
Tyler Barker suggested that a visit to the Abilities Centre, a fully accessible, multi-
use facility in Whitby, would be beneficial for the Committee. He proposed to also
invite Sport Aurora, the Mayor and Members of Council.
In anticipation of National Access Awareness W eek in June, the Committee
discussed potential speakers and events to engage public accessibility awareness,
education, and appreciation.
Tyler Barker noted that a portable, fully accessible washroom trailer will be
unveiled at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Strawberry Festival during the Canada Day
weekend. The Committee discussed the possibility of securing the trailer for
upcoming Town events.

Recommendations
1. That the memorandum regarding 2017 Community Recognition Awards be
received for information.
Background
In the fall of 2015, Council appointed a Community Recognition Review Ad Hoc
Committee to review the structure, format and content of the Town’s Community
Recognition Awards. Based on the Committee’s recommendations, Council approved a
revised format including the Inclusivity Award.
The Inclusivity Award is presented to an individual, group or business which has
contributed to making the Town of Aurora an inclusive place to live, work and play for all
people regardless of race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual
orientation, marital status, family status, or disability.
The Town of Aurora believes in inspiring volunteering and recognizing citizens who
have made a positive impact in our community. The Town is accepting nominations by
Friday April 7th for the 2017 Community Recognition Awards, which will be presented at
a ceremony on Monday, May 29, 2017.
Residents are encouraged to nominate individuals, groups and businesses that have
actively supported the Town's development and enhanced the overall community.

The T own of Aurora recognizes and honours volunteers who help create a community where individuals,
groups and businesses actively support the Town’s development and enhance the overall community.
Do you know an individual, corporation or business that deserves to be recognized for their outstanding
contributions to our community? If so, please complete the nomination form below along with a detailed
description to support your nomination and submit your signed form no later than Friday, April 7, 2017.
Winners will be recognized at the Community Recognition Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 29, 2017.
VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD
Awarded to individuals with 20 or more (25, 30, 35, 40) years of continuous service to the Aurora Community
Criteria:
•Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter of reference verifying the years of continuous
service.
** If your organization would like to recognize service awards for 5, 10 or 15 years of continued service, please submit a nomination form indicating the years of service and the Mayor and Members of Council would be happy to present these awards to the volunteers at your Annual General Meeting.
YOUTH VOLUNTEER AWARD
This award is presented to a citizen up to the age of 19, who, through their volunteer efforts, has made a
significant contribution to the community and has demonstrated their commitment to being a positive leader today
and in the future;
Criteria:
•Nominee must be 19 years of age or younger and have volunteered on behalf of or within the Town of
Aurora for at least two (2) years.
•Nominees will not be considered for this award if their nomination involved earning hours for their
Community Service Requirement or for fulfilling duties of their employment.
•Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter detailing the nominee’s contribution.
GREEN AW ARD
Honouring an individual or organization that supports the protection, preservation, sustainability or
conservation of our natural environment, this award celebrates those who share the Town’s commitment to
creating a greener community;
Criteria:
•Nominee must have made a signif icant impact on the natural environment locally or provincially in the
previous year.
•Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter detailing the individual’s or organization’s contribution.

compassion that help create connected and vibrant neighbourhoods;
Criteria:
• Nominees will not be considered for this award if their nomination involved monetary compensation or
fulfilling duties of their employment.
• Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter detailing the individual’s contribution.
GOOD BUSINESS AW ARD
This award is presented to a business that has shown its commitment to corporate responsibility and community
involvement through its ongoing support of charitable causes, events or programs;
Criteria:
• Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter detailing the businesses contributions to the
overall health and well-being of our community.
INCLUSIVITY AWARD
This award is presented to an individual, group or business which has contributed to making the Town of
Aurora an inclusive place to live, work and play for all people regardless of race, national or ethnic origin,

COMMUNITY SAFETY AWARD
Presented to an individual dedicated to the development, promotion or support of initiatives that improve community safety, this award recognizes that safer communities only happen when individuals take action to make a difference.
Criteria:
• Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter detailing the individual’s, group’s or
business’s contribution to the improvement of overall community safety.
CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Town of Aurora's Citizen of the Year Award is an annual event recognizing the exceptional contributions made
by a local citizen to our community.
The Citizen of the Year Award has been awarded by the Town of Aurora since 1970. This individual is
selected by the Office of the Mayor in consultation with a small group of dedicated community volunteers.
The award recipient has demonstrated all-round community involvement rather than specific activity or
contribution.
Criteria:
• Nominee must be a citizen of the Town of Aurora who is at least 16 years of age, excluding elected
Members of Council or employees of the Town of Aurora.
• Nominations may be made by an individual citizen, a group of citizens, and/or a Town organization.
• Nomination form must be accompanied by a letter of no more than two (2) pages, detailing the recent or
ongoing activities or contributions of the nominee in the Town of Aurora. These activities should
demonstrate all-round community involvement rather than a specific activity or contribution.
Special consideration may be given to nominees younger than 16 years of age, if the evaluation group deems such a
nomination applicable and the nominee meets all other criteria.
The evaluation group will give priority to nominations that recognize a nominee’s recent or ongoing activities or contributions
to the Town of Aurora. Special consideration may be given to posthumous nominations or to nominees whose activities or
contributions occurred more than three (3) years ago, if the evaluation group deems such nominations applicable and the
nominee meets all other criteria.
Nominations will be accepted until Friday, April 7, 2017. All nominations can be emailed to
