MINUTES - Accessibility Advisory Committee - 20140604 TOWN OF AURORA ACCESSIBILITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES Date: Wednesday, June 4, 2014 Time and Location: 7 p.m., Holland Room, Aurora Town Hall Committee Members: John Lenchak (Chair), Leonard Fox, Helen Kogan, and Councillor Wendy Gaertner Member(s) Absent: Tyler Barker (Vice Chair) Other Attendees: Sheena Vert, Interpreter, Chris Catania, Accessibility Advisor, and Patty Thoma, Council & Committee Coordinator/Deputy Clerk The Chair called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. DECLARATION OF PECUNIARY INTEREST There were no declarations of pecuniary interest under the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Moved by Helen Kogan Seconded by Leonard Fox THAT the agenda as circulated by Legal and Legislative Services, with the following additional item, be approved: Item 3 – Correspondence received from York Region Re: York Region Mobility Plus Eligibility Appeal Panel - Membership CARRIED Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Wednesday, June 4, 2014 Page 2 of 4 ADOPTION OF MINUTES Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes of May 7, 2014 Moved by Helen Kogan Seconded by Leonard Fox THAT the minutes of the Accessibility Advisory Committee meeting of May 7, 2014 be adopted. CARRIED DELEGATIONS (a) Linda Jones, Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) Re: CHS Programs and Services Moved by Councillor Gaertner Seconded by Helen Kogan THAT the Procedural By-law be waived to allow the delegate more than five minutes for the delegation. CARRIED (two-thirds vote) Ms. Jones presented an overview of the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) and noted that this non-profit, charitable organization’s mission is to provide full access and remove communication barriers for people with hearing disabilities. She advised on programs and services offered by CHS and noted various areas of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. Ms. Jones advised on communication barriers, the importance of understanding accommodation needs, and various ways and devices, including auditory and visual aids, that are available to facilitate communication and barrier-free access. She provided a demonstration of Ubi-Duo, and presented a short movie on providing and promoting customer service at recreational centres by better understanding the challenges and barriers that need to change.
