Doan House", 32 Wellington Street East. WHEREAS pursuant to Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S. 0. 1990, Chaptero.18, the Council of a municipality is authorized to enact By-laws to designate a real property, including all buildings and structures thereon, to be of cultural heritage value or interest; AND WHEREAS the municipal council of the Corporation of the Town of Aurora has cause to be served on the owners of the lands and premises at: 32 Wellington Street East Aurora, ON and up on the Ontario Heritage Foundation, notice of intention to designate the David W. Doan House at 32 Wellington Street and a statement of the reasons for the proposed designation, and further, has caused said notice of intention to be published in the Era Banner, being a newspaper of general circulation in the municipality; AND WHEREAS no notice of objection to the proposed designation has been served on the municipality; AND WHEREAS the reasons for designation are set out in Schedule "B" attached hereto and form part of this By-law; NOW THEREFORE THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF AURORA ENACTS AS FOLLOWS: 1. THAT the following real property, more particularly described in Schedule "A" attached hereto and forming part of this By-law is hereby designated as being of cultural heritage value or interest: The David W. Doan House 32 Wellington Street East Town of Aurora The Regional Municipality of York 2. THAT the Town solicitor is hereby authorized to cause a copy of this By-law to be registered against the property described in Schedule "A" attached hereto at the Land Registry Office. Doan House at 32 Wellington Street East is recommended for designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act because of its cultural heritage value or interest. Statement of Cultural Heritage Value Historical or Associative Value The David W. Doan House, located at 32 Wellington Street east has historical value as an Aurora mansion from the 1870s period that was lived in for most of its history by a series of prominent Aurorans who made a significant contribution to the development of Aurora. Architectural Value The David W. Doan House has architectural value an important example Georgian influenced vernacular architecture of the 1870s period in Aurora with compatible later alterations which reflected the varied tastes and trends in architecture in this period. Contextual Value The David W. Doan House has contextual value as a significant architectural landmark on Wellington Street, one of the most architecturally significant and intact major heritage streets in York Region. Description of Heritage Attributes The Description of Heritage Attributes include the following heritage attributes and apply to all elevations and the roof including all facades, entrances, windows, chimneys, and trim, together with construction materials of wood, brick, stone, plaster parging, metal and glazing, their related building techniques and landscape features: Exterior Elements: • 2 storey brick exterior walls; • 3 bay fac;:ade dominated by a 2-storey front porch; • Brickwork, tuck pointed and painted; • Medium pitched hipped roof, including: o Wide eaves, made of wood; o Soffits o Fascia o Wood Trim • Segmental arched openings on windows of the 1873 section of the building with keyed voussoirs and wood sills; • Main entrance, including: o Segmental transom light with central muntin o Engaged, fluted Doric columns flanking the front door; o Paneled transom o Oak door with single light; • Front Porch o Six unfluted Ionic Columns on brick piers o Two matching engaged columns on brick piers o Red shingles o 3-sided window openings o Gable-roofed porch with pent eave accentuated by red stained wood shingles; • Exterior of historic rear wing; By-law Number 4948-0?.R Page 4 of 5 Note: The windows and fenestration are modern but are representative of the original sash windows. Any replacement of the windows should be in keeping with the existing design which echoes historic precedents.
