STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Page 3
The former Hartman's Corners Schoolhouse at 118 Wellington Street East is
recommended for designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act because of
its historical, architectural and contextual attributes.
Description of Historic Place
Constructed circa 1838, the Hartman's Corners School is a one storey, wood building
built of vertical plank construction with the influence of the Greek Revival Style.
Originally located in the former hamlet of Hartman's Corners, where it was a
community landmark and meeting place, the building was relocated circa 1883 to
Wellington Street in Aurora, where it has formed part of the historic streetscape for
over 120 years. The property is recognized for its heritage value by the Town of
Aurora Council which recommended designation of the school under Part IV of the
Ontario Heritage Act on June 14, 2005.
Heritage Value
The heritage value of the former Hartman's Corners School at 118 Wellington Street
lies in it being the earliest and most intact examples of a one-room school house in
Aurora, the Region of York and the Greater Toronto Area, and is possibly the 3'd
oldest schoolhouse standing in Ontario. The cultural heritage value is expressed in
its historical associations with early public education in the vicinity of Aurora and York
County ..
The former school also has architectural value as a rare and early example of a one-
room school, built of vertical plank construction with the influence of the Georgian
Architectural Style.
Relocated to its present site over 120 years ago, the building also has value as an
important contributor to the historic character of Wellington Street
The heritage value and reasons for designation apply to all elevations and the roof
of the building including all facades, early windows, window openings, entranceways,
remnants of original siding and trim, together with wood construction materials
including vertical planks and building techniques.
Character defining elements
Key elements that embody the heritage character of the Hartman's Corners School
include:
• It is a rare and early reminder of the development of education in the local
community, county and the Province.
• Original use as a schoolhouse. It is a good, representative, and example of a
type of building now no longer built;
• Rectangular plan;
• Low pitched gable roof;
• Vertical plank construction. It is a good representative example of a method
of construction now no longer in use;
