BYLAW - Designate 'The Wilton Barn' - 20051213 - 472905RTHE CORPORATION OF THE tOWN OF AURORA By-law Number 4729•05.R BEING A BY-LAW TO Designate a certain property As being of Historic and/or Architectural Value or Interest "The Wilton Barn 13831 Leslie Street" WHEREAS pursuant to Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S. 0. 1990, Chapter o.18, the Council of a municipality is authorized to enact Bylaws to designate a real property, including all buildings and structures thereon, to be of cultural heritage va I u e or interest; AND WHEREAS the municipal Council of the Corporation of the Town of Aurora has cause to be served on the owners of the lands and premises at: 13831 Leslie Street Aurora, ON and up on the Ontario Heritage Foundation, notice of intention to designate the Wilton Barn located at 13831 Leslie Street and a statement of the reasons for the proposed designation, and further, has caused said notice of intention to be published in the Era Banner, being a newspaper of general circulation in the municipality; AND WHEREAS no notice of objection to the proposed designation has been served on the municipality; AND WHEREAS the reasons for designation are set out in Schedule "B" attached hereto and form part of this By-law; NOW THEREFORE THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF AURORA ENACTS AS FOLLOWS: 1. THAT the following real property, more particularly described in Schedule "A" attached hereto and forming part of this By-law is hereby designated as being of cultural heritage value or interest: The Wilton Barn 13831 Leslie Street Town of Aurora The Regional Municipality of York 2. '-•••·--~--~~-··•'-•-"•••----· ,.,_.,,.•~--···-•·-~--~~ ' SCHEDULE "B" TO BY-LAW 4729-05.R STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Wilton Barn at 13831 Leslie Street is recommended for designation under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act because of its cultural heritage value or interest. Description of Historic Place Constructed in the 2na Quarter of the 19th Century on property at Lot 11, Concession 3, Whitchurch Township, The Wilton Barn is a rare and early survivor within the boundaries of the present day Town of Aurora of a pre-confederation English Style raised barn, which was raised and adapted to mixed farm uses in the later 19th Century. The barn was built on land owned by the Wilton Family who were among the original settlers in this part of the former Whitchurch Township and remained on the land for approximately 100 years. The property is recognized for its heritage value by the Town of Aurora Council which recommended designation of the barn under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act on September 13, 2005. Heritage Value The heritage value of the Wilton Barn at 13831 Leslie Street lies in it being one of the earliest and most intact examples of an early English style grain barn, which was later raised and converted to mixed farming uses later in the 19th Century. The cultural heritage value is expressed in its historical associations with the early agricultural industry in the vicinity of Aurora, Whitchurch Township and York County. The barn also of architectural value as a rare and early example of an English style barn, built of old growth wood from as early as the mid-1830s and exhibits some noteworthy features, in particular the large hewn beams, expertly notched and pegged together. · The heritage value and reasons for designation apply to the overall barn form, historic timber frame, stone foundation, log floor supports, hay mow, swing beam, earthen ramp, together with historic window and door openings. Character defining elements Key elements that embody the heritage character of the Wilton Barn include: • It is a rare and early reminder of an English grain barn converted to mixed use farming in the later 19th Century; • Overall Barn form; • Medium pitched roof • Historic Wood Frame; • Stone Foundation; • Earth ramp to second floor; • Log floor supports; • Horse stalls; • Centre Opening -North Elevation • Hay mow • 20" wide swing beam; • Historic window and door openings in the foundation; -..._,,__
