Dear Mr. Hanes,
'91 SEP 23 p 4 :31
Your letter regarding the designation of the Graham-Wood house under the Ontario Heritage Act
has been referred to me for reply.
Designation was initiated by Aurora Council on the advice of its local Architectural Conservation
Advisory Committee which consists of three councillors and five citizen members. A great deal
of work is done by these citizens, including myself, on a volunteer basis, keeping expenses
related to the Committee's work at a minimum.
We have no intention of designating every old house in Aurora. Only six buildings have been
designated so far: five are privately owned. One, the 1886 Church Street School, is owned by
the Town and has been recognized by the Province of Ontario as an outstanding example of late
Victorian architecture. The Town-owned Graham-Wood house was recommended for
designation because it is perhaps the only surviving example of its type in our community. Since
the majority of our earliest buildings have been demolished, we felt that this one, even though
it has been greatly altered over the years, was worthy of recognition. It also is designated for
historical reasons because of its links with Captain William Graham, a United Empire loyalist
and one of Aurora's earliest settlers, and his son, Adam Graham, who played an important role
in the Rebellion of 1837. I think that most people would agree that it is important for
communities to maintain and respect the evidence of their past if they hope to continue to be
desirable places to live.
Designation under the Ontario Heritage Act in no way prevents the Town from selling this
property in the future. In fact, our province's heritage legislation is so weak that any owner can
demolish a designated property after only a few months' delay. Designation would, however,
indicate that a building is worthy of preservation and would encourage any future owner to
maintain it. There already are several examples of heritage building~Qll Yonge.and.~ep.ington
Streets in Aurora which are being well maintained while serving a variety of commercial and
other uses. The Graham-Wood house now is rented as a daycare centre.
I cannot answer your question as to why this building was not designated previously. As I noted
earlier, however, the work of the Town's Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee
is done largely on a volunteer basis and its agenda is always full.

I hope this will answer your concerns. If not, please feel free to contact me at home (727-6466)
if there are any other questions I can answer. If you wish to submit this matter to the provincial
Conservation Review Board for a hearing, a process would be involved which could be lengthy
and costly to our taxpayers. You certainly would be welcome to attend our next Committee
meeting at the new Town Hall on Monday, October 21, at 7:30p.m. If we do not hear from
you, we will assume that you do not wish this matter to be presented to the Conservation Review
Board.
